Perugia, Sada Cruzeiro and the Newcomers: The Power Map of Poland 2026

On the entry list for the 2026 FIVB Men's Club World Championship, the first thing I search for is the gap. Poland hosts, yet no Polish club is on it. A European arena will light up for eight flags from four continents, while the host nation keeps only the role of the one holding the door open. FIVB released the list for the 2026 edition, alongside confirmation that Poland will also host in 2027. Eight clubs, four continents. Perugia of Italy arrive as reigning club world champions and CEV Champions League winners, with Oleh Plotnytskyi and Simone Giannelli in the squad. Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil have taken this title five times. Vôlei Renata add a second Brazilian entry. Ziraat of Turkey and Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi of Indonesia are debutants, and Jakarta are the first Indonesian men's club to win an Asian continental title. Four volleyball systems share a single court: Europe brings power and height through Perugia and Ziraat; South America counters with Sada Cruzeiro and Vôlei Renata, balanced between physique and technique; Asia enters with speed and stubborn defence in Jakarta and Foolad Sirjan; Al Ahly carry Africa's physical style. That variety is the tournament's appeal, and the reason predictions are difficult.

The structure of power, however, is clearer than its surface. Perugia are the leading candidate: world champions, European champions, a squad of international stars, raised inside Serie A, the strongest domestic league on the planet. Sada Cruzeiro are the most dangerous name behind them, with five world titles and deep knock-out experience. The distance between these two and the rest is not small, and the tournament's geographic expansion reflects FIVB's market ambition rather than a club game that has levelled out, and the financial gap between Serie A and everyone else remains untouched on the floor.

One variable gets little attention: geography. Every non-European side must travel long distances to Poland, carrying jet lag and fitness questions. Ziraat, though European, are debutants; Jakarta and Foolad Sirjan must adapt to elite intensity in a very short window. The eight-team group-then-knockout format rewards consistency, but it also lets one bad match wipe out an entire tournament.

Based on my experience following club matches across continents, I keep a separate notebook for teams stepping onto a big stage for the first time. I do not write down scores there; I write down a player's eyes in the first training session, how they stand for the anthem, the breath after the first missed ball. Those details tell you whether a team can hold under pressure.

And here I want to be direct. The “small town beats the giant” story is always told beautifully, but it hides an operational reality: a place in the draw does not mean a matching financial base. When a newcomer walks on court, it faces squads whose bench player may earn more than its entire starting six. The tournament makes them famous, gives their country more fans, but it does not automatically close that gap.

For fans in Indonesia and Iran, the presence of Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi and Foolad Sirjan is a historic milestone, and they have every right to be proud. But oversized expectations can turn “The Defeated Warriors” into an unnecessary tragedy. A semi-final place would already be a major success for a first-time entrant.

For Perugia, the biggest risk is not the opponent. It is a congested domestic calendar, the need to rotate, and the injury question around Giannelli or Plotnytskyi. “A contract is only paper; the bond with a club is the symphony”, but at professional club level, that paper also says the club must protect its assets. A star collapsing in Poland would cost the club for the rest of the season.

Poland hosting two editions in a row without a Polish club should be read as a commercial decision. A multi-year agreement with the host federation lets FIVB stabilise the venue and cut organisational costs. It also touches the emotional side of the stands: “The stands are empty, yet I still hear ten thousand hearts keeping time.” Will Poles fill an arena with no team of their own, or wait for a wild card announced late?

The possibility of FIVB adding a host club has a solid basis, especially since the announcement shows the list is not final. If that happens, the mood of the tournament changes entirely; if not, it will unfold in a neutrality rare for a world-level event. Whether the gap between the richest teams and the newcomers is narrowing cannot be answered by a list; it is answered on the court, and ultimately by whether a volleyball nation dares to keep investing.
