In Athens, Dimitris Giannakopoulos is famous for statements loud enough to shake the entire EuroLeague. His latest question for Željko Obradović belongs to the hardest category of all: if a team made up of Dimitris Diamantidis, Mike Batiste, Fragiskos Alvertis, Dejan Bodiroga and Šarūnas Jasikevičius played Panathinaikos as it will look in 2026-27, who wins?

The man being asked is not a television commentator. First, memory always wins. Fans remember legends on their peak nights, while the contemporary team is judged by its worst game of the week. Any comparison of this kind starts from a methodological injustice. I sat in OAKA on a Final Four night and watched Diamantidis control a game with passes no box score ever fully captured; that feeling is intact, and it is precisely why memory holds the edge in every poll.

Second, a game like this has ticket prices, sponsors and broadcast rights, which means it has a very clear commercial motive. If it were ever staged, organisers would have to handle a detail that is not small: one of the invited figures is the president of the league. That is why I keep an old rule: do not chase the story, chase the motive. Who needs this story told?

I once sold a 50 million pound dream; when I woke up, the buyer was me. The basketball version of that dream is a legends roster nobody has priced, against a roster nobody has signed. Neither side has books to compare.

The next domino

Panathinaikos's real value will not be decided by a commemorative game, but by whether the club produces the next Diamantidis — in the academy, in the transfer window, in how it pays a 21-year-old guard.
