Two Foreign Slots and the 2m01 Giant of Cong An Nhan Dan

Long An stadium, the afternoon of September 11. On the Cong An Nhan Dan bench there was not a single foreign player. The visitors entered matchday 1 of the 2026-2027 First Division with a purely domestic squad, while their most awaited signing — Santos Thaileon, last season's top scorer with 14 goals for Quy Nhon United — was entirely absent from coach Nguyen Duc Thang's registered list.

I rewatched the footage of that match three times. Not to count goals. To hear the rhythm. Cong An Nhan Dan beat Long An 2-1, both goals belonging to Nguyen Hoang Anh, a substitute. A club targeting the title and promotion, opening the season with a domestic striker...

That good news was only an advance payment. Exactly one week later, the club signed another Brazilian forward: Gonzalo Fornari, 26 years old, 2m01 tall.

That height makes him the tallest foreign player currently competing in both the First Division and the V-League. Last season Fornari wore the shirt of Busan IPark in K-League 2 and scored 7 goals. In a league where defences play long balls, physical duels and tactical fouls without hesitation, 2m01 is a weapon of a fundamentally different kind.

Cong An Nhan Dan had prepared for this season very early. At the start of the campaign they signed Santos Thaileon, the striker who won the First Division Golden Boot last season with 14 goals, to serve the goal of winning the title and promotion. Then Thaileon was not registered for the Long An match. Then Fornari arrived.

What matters is not how many foreign forwards a club owns, but that it has only one slot to send onto the pitch in its most important competition. The National Cup closes its list at 15:00 on September 17. The First Division closes at 15:00 on October 15. On October 6, Cong An Nhan Dan host Hue at home in the National Cup qualifier. Almost a month. Enough to observe, enough to test, and also enough to get it wrong.

The collective memory of Vietnamese football has a fairly fixed habit: it remembers tall forwards through nights that have little to do with the national league. In 2026-2026, Nam Dinh had Kyle Hudlin, 2m06 tall. He scored a brace in the 2026 Super Cup match that Nam Dinh lost 2-3 to Cong An Ha Noi. He scored another brace against the Vietnam national team in a 4-0 friendly win. He scored in the 1-3 defeat to Gamba Osaka in the 2026-2026 AFC Champions League.

Three moments. Three times people called Hudlin a discovery. In the 2026-2026 V-League, after 5 matches, he scored no goals and left early through injury.

Giants do not win with height. They win with the number of passes that arrive exactly on top of their heads.

Watching footage of recent First Division rounds, I noticed a small detail few people mention: mid-table teams almost automatically drop their defensive block below the 16.50m line when facing stronger opposition. In that shape, a 2m01 striker stands between four defenders and a holding midfielder, while the ball is crossed in from wide with loops high enough for the goalkeeper to collect.

A tall centre-forward only has value when the ball arrives in the right place. Vietnamese football's problem has never been the receiver. It is the sender.

Fornari is not the kind of centre-forward who simply plants himself in the box. At 26, having played in K-League 2, he has the physical base to move widely, drag defenders out of position and open space for the second line. But that is a description of potential, not a report of achievement. Seven goals in a league whose tempo is higher than Vietnam's First Division is the number of a competent player, not of a goal machine.

Thaileon is different in nature. Fourteen goals in the First Division is evidence already validated at exactly the arena where Cong An Nhan Dan need points. He knows where defenders in this league commit fouls, at what rhythm referees blow their whistle, how long the season runs and how cold December gets.

So why was Thaileon not registered in matchday 1? Possibly fitness. Possibly tactics. Possibly a negotiation not yet finished. Answers like that never make the bulletin, and readers are left with speculation.

This is the blind spot of almost every promotion race: people believe goals are a striker's problem, while goals are in fact a problem of the quality of the ball arriving. Cong An Nhan Dan beat Long An 2-1 without a foreign player. Hoang Anh's two goals did not come from aerial duels. They came from runs into the box at the right moment, when Long An's defence had lost its structure.

That suggests another direction: if the problem lies in supply, upgrading the crossing and second lines is cheaper, more durable and more stable than keeping two foreigners for one slot. The First Division season is long, with months of three matches in ten days, with long away trips. A foreign player must carry the whole season. A midfield that knows how to pass carries more than that.

A foreign slot does not buy goals. It buys a way of believing.

The five-substitution rule makes squad depth a genuine advantage, and at the same time turns the final 20 minutes into a war of attrition, where teams with two fundamentally different attacking options survive.

Fornari and Thaileon are two fundamentally different options. The first is an aerial spearhead for situations that require breaking down a packed defensive block. The second is a striker who has proven his scoring ability in this very league. Choosing either means giving up a tool. In a league where the champion is often only a few points ahead of the runner-up, the tool left behind may be exactly the points lost.

By 15:00 on October 15, one name will be on paper. The other will be outside. Ten months from now, which match will we remember?
