Milton Keynes Ladies Table Tennis Tournament: Over £650 raised for breast cancer charity and the vitality of grassroots sport

Milton Keynes – Table tennis is often associated with World Cup finals, world rankings or multimillion transfers. But at the Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre in England, a small tournament on September 6 told a different story. The second annual ladies charity table tennis tournament raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now and collected more than 100 old bras for recycling. There were no packed stands or television cameras, but there were 14 women, a spirit of fair play, and a powerful message of community connection. The event was organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of the centre. It was designed to be fun and fair, with two group rounds followed by a main event and a consolation final. Most participants came from the centre’s monthly ladies-only table tennis sessions. This is not a talent-scouting tournament, but a welcoming playground for local women. The initiative also included a bra recycling campaign, supporting the Against Breast Cancer programme. Beyond the competition, the tournament raised awareness about breast cancer and provided a warm, social space. The centre will host another ladies session on November 1 from 10am to 12pm. Donations remain welcome. This event may not produce Olympic champions, but it strengthens grassroots table tennis. It shows how a local club can build a healthy community through regular sessions, small competitions, and charitable giving. The real value is not in scores, but in the people who keep coming back to play.
