Wedge Fitting: Why Indoor Data Alone Is Not Enough

Every golfer has experienced the perfect swing on a practice mat, only to find the ball in an unexpected position on the course. Numbers from an indoor launch monitor can look clean, but that doesn't mean they reflect real-world conditions. Jerry Azurin, Cleveland/Srixon/XXIO's product manager for fitting, has spent years refining wedge fitting. He recognizes that mat-based testing can overlook the most important variables in the short game. A typical wedge fitting begins by asking about current performance, the types of shots needed from 80 yards and in, and what the golfer wants to improve. The launch monitor then captures data on angle of attack, strike location, shaft weight and flex, and launch characteristics. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. Real turf, moisture, sand, and how the ball sits on the fairway cannot be reproduced indoors. The biggest issue lies in the interaction between club and turf. Mats are forgiving, so a steep swinger may not realize that their wedge digs into the ground on real grass. A launch monitor can indicate a steep attack angle, but it cannot simulate the feel of the head hitting the turf. This is a blind spot many golfers overlook. Therefore, Azurin stresses that outdoor testing is the ultimate verification. Golfers should go to a course similar to where they usually play, including fairway firmness and bunker quality. Ball selection also plays a critical role. Worn range balls can distort the numbers, while the actual game ball golfers use is the most accurate measure. Data don't lie, but they only tell part of the truth. A swing optimized indoors can become useless when faced with thick rough or soft fairways. Launch monitor numbers don't lie, but they can't feel the grass underfoot. That explains why many professionals evaluate new clubs by combining data with real feel. From a counterintuitive perspective, I believe wedge fitting is being idolized by numbers. In football, I learned that a data model cannot measure dressing-room chemistry. Golf is no different: a perfect paper swing can fail under psychological pressure and harsh course conditions. The market obsesses over high-spin wedge shots, but if the golfer isn't comfortable with how the club feels on contact, every number becomes meaningless. So what really matters in wedge fitting? The combination of objective data and subjective experience. Good fitting requires asking about real situations, testing on multiple turf types, and listening to feedback. It takes longer, but yields lasting results. I don't predict where fitting technology is heading, but I believe it will keep evolving. Yet after eleven years of covering sports, I've learned that data speaks when you listen to it in context. For wedges, that means going outside, hitting on natural grass, and feeling every shot. The data don't lie, but they only have value when interpreted with a true understanding of the game.
